Project Duration
1 Month · Solo Project
Goal
Helping museums with limited budgets digitize artifacts through crowdsourcing initiatives

This project develops a crowd-sourcing platform to digitally preserve museum collections by leveraging tourists’ engagement and photo-taking habits. It aims to make preservation accessible and efficient, ensuring that exhibits are safeguarded in advance against potential risks ranging from fires to accidents.

Context

The National Museum of Brazil was devastated by a fire on September 2, 2018, destroying over 90% of its collections and causing significant cultural loss. Following this, Wikipedia asked tourists on Twitter to upload photos to aid in artefact restoration and virtual recreation, prompting the question: Could digital preservation begin even earlier?

Concept

Research on tourist behaviour reveals a mutual exchange of value between visitors and museums, inspiring the development of Co-collection. This crowd-sourcing platform for digital preservation uses photogrammetry to encourage photo-taking by enriching visitor experiences with captivating exhibit stories, thereby collaboratively gathering image data for preservation.

Process

Technical exploration and digital prototyping were central to the design process. Photos of museum collections were processed using RealityCapture to demonstrate the feasibility of digital preservation with standard photos. I also delved into Apple’s ObjectCapture API and Swift UI to develop scanning prototypes and validate the feasibility of real-time photogrammetry on mobile devices.
